Oahu, the heart of Hawaii, is a captivating blend of natural beauty, rich culture, and thrilling adventures. Whether you're a first-time visitor or a seasoned traveler, this island has something for everyone. From beautiful beaches and stunning hiking trails to historic sites and vibrant city life, Oahu offers a diverse array of experiences that will leave you in awe and eager to go back. Here are 10 must-do activities that will make your time on Oahu unforgettable!
Hanauma Bay - a stunning natural preserve on Oahu, known for its crystal-clear waters, vibrant coral reefs, and diverse marine life. This crescent-shaped bay, formed within a volcanic crater, is a top spot for snorkeling and offers an up-close look at Hawaii’s underwater beauty. This site is excellent for novice snorkelers like myself. I chose to rent a life jacket, which made me feel very secure, and I had the opportunity to observe numerous beautiful fish and even an octopus! We woke up at 7am two days prior to our preferred date to reserve our spot. Admission is $25 per non-Hawaii resident 13 years or older and children 12 and under are free. Hanauma Bay is stunning and a must-visit destination for everyone.
Dole Plantation - A family-friendly destination offering a taste of Hawaii’s pineapple heritage. Known for its lush gardens, interactive exhibits, and the world’s largest maze, it offers an enjoyable and educational experience for visitors of all ages. We only spent a little over an hour at the Dole Plantation while on our self-driven island tour, but really enjoyed the Pineapple Express Train Tour. For $13.75, you can go on a 20-minute ride through the plantation and hear all about its history while taking in the scenic grounds. For people interested in spending more time on the plantation, there are also garden tours and you can wander the maze. On your way out, don't forget to visit the gift shop for all the pineapple goodies, especially the iconic Dole Whip, a refreshing pineapple soft-serve treat!
Waikiki Beach - an iconic stretch of golden sand, framed by beautiful turquoise waters and the majestic Diamond Head crater. Perfect for a beach day, surfing, or simply soaking in the island vibe. Whether you’re catching waves or enjoying a sunset stroll, Waikiki Beach offers an unforgettable slice of paradise. Just don't forget your sunscreen!
Kalākaua Avenue - the bustling heart of Waikiki, known for its vibrant mix of high-end boutiques, local shops, and world-class dining. Stretching along the coastline, this lively street offers everything from luxury shopping at the Royal Hawaiian Center to street performances and cultural events. If you are interested in making any purchases, keep in mind sales tax is only 4.50%, much less than most other U.S states. Definitely don't miss out on stopping in the many Honolulu Cookie Company stores along the street for a free sample!
Kualoa Ranch - a breathtaking 4,000-acre nature reserve offering unforgettable adventures amidst lush valleys, towering mountains, and stunning ocean views. Known as the "Hollywood's Hawaii" for its iconic film locations, the ranch features endless activities including UTV tours, horseback riding, and ziplining. We chose the raptor UTV tour, which lasts approximately 2 hours and involves groups of UTVs accommodating 2-6 people, allowing you to take turns driving through the picturesque valleys. This was one of our favorite parts of our trip and is a must-visit destination for nature lovers and adventure seekers alike.
Manoa Falls - a picturesque 150-foot waterfall nestled in the lush rainforest of Oahu's Manoa Valley. This was the perfect mild to moderate hike through the tranquil and lush tropical greenery to the sounds of cascading water. We had just around four days in Oahu, so this was a pleasant and fairly quick hike that let us enjoy nature amidst our other activities. Be sure to wear supportive shoes, especially if you hike in the rain as we did. Perfect for adventurers and nature lovers, Manoa Falls is a must-see gem just a short drive from Honolulu.
Moanalua Garden - a serene and beautifully landscaped park in Oahu, known for its iconic Monkeypod trees. This was also a stop along our self-driven island tour and found the gardens to be incredibly peaceful, perfect for picnics, leisurely strolls, and connecting with Hawaii’s natural beauty and history. It’s also home to the famous “Hitachi Tree,” a famous Japanese symbol, making it a popular spot for photography and relaxation.
Green World Coffee Farm - a charming, family-owned coffee farm on Oahu’s North Shore, offering a glimpse into Hawaii’s coffee culture. Another stop on our self-driven island tour, we opted for a quick pit stop here on our way to the Dole Plantation. Visitors can explore the lush coffee garden, sample a variety of freshly brewed Hawaiian coffees, and shop unique local products. I grabbed some postcards and a delicious blended ice coffee for the road. With its welcoming atmosphere and rich flavors, it’s a perfect stop for coffee enthusiasts and travelers alike.
Lanikai Beach - a breathtaking paradise on Oahu’s windward side, known for its powdery white sand and crystal-clear turquoise waters. Framed by the iconic Mokulua Islands in the distance, it’s a perfect spot for swimming, kayaking, or simply relaxing under the sun. Consistently ranked as one of the world’s most beautiful beaches, Lanikai offers a serene escape with unparalleled natural beauty.
Waimea Bay - located on Oahu’s North Shore, is also famous for its stunning golden sands, crystal-clear waters, and legendary surf. In winter, it’s a hotspot for watching massive waves and world-class surfers, while summer brings calm waters perfect for swimming and snorkeling. Surrounded by dramatic cliffs and lush landscapes, Waimea Bay offers another iconic Hawaiian beach experience.

Honorable Mentions
Rent a Jeep or other fun car - We had the best time driving around the island with the top down in a Jeep. We used Turo to rent a Jeep for the 4 days and found the process super simple and affordable. Enjoying the stunning island scenery with the wind in your hair is an unparalleled experience.
Take a surfing lesson - We chose to take surf lessons through Airbnb experience with a native Hawaiian. This was our second time having a surfing lesson and we had so much fun. What's even better about this particular experience is you also receive video footage of your surfing to prove your skills to everyone back at home. The tide was generally low so we could comfortably stand the entire time. This was also a nice way to support a local business.
Final Thoughts
Oahu truly offers something for everyone, whether you're seeking adventure, relaxation, or a taste of Hawaii's rich culture.
